Your Yearly Reminder: Cinema = Still Not Dead

Tonight sees the premiere of Avengers: Age of Ultron (which I’m sure is news to all of you) which in-turn kicks off the official summer movie season for 2015 (you probably knew that too). So with the summer season and its relatively consistent onslaught of big-budget franchise pictures will likely come periodic angry essays decrying the death of cinema and the end of movies as a whole. Or maybe not, but just in case, I’d like to take this pre-summer moment to remind us of a few things. This summer is (probably) not totally the worst summer in recent history. There will be plenty of non-blockbuster options all summer long at a theatre near you or via your preferred Video On Demand outlet. Even if you end up hating the various blockbusters that emerge between the launch of Avengers: Age of Ultron and Hitman: Agent 47, the movie industry is more than just its biggest blockbusters. In short, whether you like the big movies or prefer the smaller fare, or just want a little of both, cinema is still absolutely not dead.
