Christie helps bring the Genius of Hitchcock to life for BFI

A Christie CP Series 2K DLP Cinema® projector, supplied and operated by Motion Picture Solutions, was used as part of the BFI’s The Genius of Hitchcock season which includes high profile presentations of newly-restored restored silent films, made between the years 1925 and 1929.

The world premiere of the new restoration of The Lodger was screened at The Barbican Centre, using a Christie cinema projector — with a new score by British Asian composer, Nitin Sawhney, performed live by the London Symphony Orchestra and the Nitin Sawhney Band on Saturday 21st July.

The Lodger is a thriller shot against a backdrop of a fog-shroudedLondonand features matinee idol of the day, Ivor Novello. This is the largest screening in the BFI’s Hitchcock project.

Following the successful collaboration with Motion Picture Solutions last year, when the BFI’s Christie 2K cinema projector was used to screen a special digital print of Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey at the Royal Festival Hall (accompanied by the Royal Philharmonia) they were again brought in for the Hitchcock season — and purchased two Christie 2K projectors for the purpose.

Working alongside Deluxe 142, the BFI has spent three years working on restoring the nine surviving Hitchcock silent films. This was duly carried out by the BFI Archive and Deluxe.

Tint and tone colours were accurately recreated to match the film originals. The graded, conformed scans were then digitally restored to remove defects such as scratches, warping, fluctuations, mould and frame damage.

After a final review screening with the BFI, a 35mm fully restored, colour or B/W polyester digital negative was recorded out to film frame by frame on the latest laser film recorders. Show prints of the new restoration were made along with a 2K data archive of all scans and restored files, a digital cinema package and TV Masters.

Newly restored prints of Downhill, Easy Virtue, Champagne, The Farmer’s Wife and The Manxman (including screenings of The Pleasure Garden, Blackmail, The Ring) — and an extended run of The Lodger — will be presented as part of the major Hitchcock retrospective at BFI Southbank from August to October — all screened using the exhibitor’s resident Christie CP2000/CP2000-XB projectors.

BFI Southbank has enjoyed a fruitful relationship with Christie over the past decade, starting with the first generation Roadster X4’s. It has since embraced each generation of Christie’s new DCI-compliant cinema projectors.

The BFI’s head of technical services, Richard Boyd, confirms that BFI Southbank will shortly be installing Christie 2K and 4K platforms in its four cinemas.
