Sony Professional Solutions Europe (PSE) confirms the appointment of Damien Weissenburger to spearhead the company’s expanding Theatre Solutions business that serves cinema chains and independent screen owners.

Damien assumes his new role as Business Head of Sony Digital Cinema 4K in parallel with current responsibilities as Business Head of Corporate & Education Solutions. Based in the UK, he will oversee strategic growth plans for the two separate business entities.

Since its formation in 2010, Sony Digital Cinema has seen significant commercial success, staffed by a team of experts. Drawing on its unique skills in digital imaging, presentation technologies and filmed entertainment, the company introduced the first commercially available 4K Digital Cinema projector, delivering immersive cinematic experiences to audiences worldwide. Since then, the business has further expanded its portfolio with a family of reliable, high-contrast 4K projection solutions that deliver industry-leading image quality on every size of cinema screen.

With the news widely announced during CineEurope, Damien looks forward to numerous customer engagements at the show, fully immersing himself within the world of cinematic exhibition.

“In this new role I will be building on David McIntosh’s great work as Sony’s cinema business moves into its next exciting phase of growth”, comments Damien Weissenburger.

“Maximising synergies from across Sony, I believe we can develop innovative new presentation solutions that will shape the future of cinema exhibition. One example of this is our Crystal LED big-screen display technology, being shown here at CineEurope. This gives an intriguing hint of a possible future for digital cinema – one that may not even involve projectors at all!”

Sony has a unique position in the Cinema industry, not forgetting that in itself it’s an entertainment company with a Hollywood movie studio. “More than other electronics manufacturers, we absolutely understand the importance of creating amazing images that connect emotionally with audiences. I’m excited to focus in on accelerating our innovation capabilities in Europe to continue to offer our customers and exhibition partners the very best picture show” he concludes.

Damien takes over from David McIntosh who now heads up Sony’s Sports division that includes technology innovator Hawk-Eye and sporting content solutions specialist Pulselive. Further details on David’s role will follow in July.
