Noisy people who talk to their friends during a film screening have topped a list of Brits’ biggest cinema bugbears.

Almost two-thirds of adults (65 per cent) said the sound of constant chatter from nearby seats was a massive faux-pas, with phones going off taking second place on 59 per cent.

Making up the top five cinema peeves were people slurping on their drinks, being forced to move when someone needs the toilet mid-viewing, and people laughing during non-funny scenes of a film.

The research was carried out by The National Lottery to celebrate its 25th birthday.

Over the past quarter-century, through the BFI, funding from the lottery has gone towards the production of more than 500 films which have won a combined 15 Oscars and 100 BAFTAs.

Famous movies funded through the scheme include Bend It Like Beckham, The King’s Speech, The Last King of Scotland and Billy Elliot.

To celebrate the landmark, this Sunday is National Lottery Cinema Day where more than 500,000 free tickets are available for National Lottery players at over 250 cinemas across the UK.

Gurinder Chadha, director of Bend It Like Beckham and new film Blinded by the Light, said: “It’s very important not to underestimate the power of buying a National Lottery ticket.

“Money from each ticket goes to fund incredibly good causes, including the BFI, which gives much needed opportunities to people with creative talent across the UK film industry.

“I couldn’t have made ‘Bend It like Beckham’ without BFI funding and as The National Lottery turns 25, I look forward to seeing young directors flourish with the same support.”

The survey carried out by the National Lottery also revealed dads were the ideal film buddy to watch classic UK films with, closely followed by mums.

Girlfriends are the top choice when it comes to romantic comedies and tear-jerkers, yet most adults like to go to the cinema with their best mates to watch comic book films, action and horror films.

The character we’re most likely to relate to in the films we watch is the wise old man or woman.

And Britain’s love of the underdog is also represented as the second most relatable character, closely followed by the hopeless romantic.
