The public will get to have their say on the plans in January

Redcar is at risk of losing its “identity” and “soul” with plans to replace the seaside town’s Regent Cinema, a meeting has heard.

Redcar and Cleveland Council leader Mary Lanigan was quizzed by the public on Tuesday over the £9.7m plan to demolish and replace the Regent Cinema .

The plan is to replace the crumbling current cinema with a new three-screen, 184-seat cinema complex.

But the proposals have come under fire from Labour opposition, which has argued that the Art Deco seafront building should be saved .

Independent Cllr Lanigan told a cabinet meeting said the council had received “very clear advice” from engineers that the existing structure needed replacing.

She said: “We will make sure the public have every chance to look at everything they want to look at and then they can feed back to us to make a decision.”
