‘Look at The Globe in Stockton’: Refurbishing Redcar’s Regent Cinema could be ‘monumental mistake’

Refurbishing Redcar’s Regent Cinema could be a “monumental mistake” at risk of “spiralling out of control” like Stockton’s Globe, a meeting has heard. Plans to flatten the landmark building on Redcar’s seafront and replace it with a new three-screen cinema have proved divisive to say the least . The historic building had structural problems and closed in April 2018 for safety reasons .

The ruling Independent-Lib Dem coalition of Redcar and Cleveland Council say a new £9m complex would create new jobs and support existing businesses in the area through footfall and visitors.

While many have welcomed the news, others say the historic art deco Regent Cinema building should be saved from demolition.
