Digital cinema roll out in Europe - Figures published last week by the European Audiovisual Observatory in association with MEDIA Salles reveal that 2008 saw an increase across Europe in the number of digital screens equipped with DLP Cinema or Sony 4K technology. The number of screens rose by 70% through the year, to stand at 1,529 as of 1 January 2009. The Observatory estimates that around 5% of all European screens had been converted to digital by the end of 2008. The number of cinemas equipped with at least one digital screen grew by 48%, to a total of 815 sites (Table 1).

Kodak digital cinema strategy bearing fruit - Italy has entered the digital screen advertising revolution, with Warner Bros International Cinemas (WBIC) aiming to convert its entire network during the first half of this year. WBIC has signed Kodak Digital Cinema to install a networked digital advertising system in all its cinemas, numbering 172 screens in 17 sites when two new sites are completed this year. WBIC is building on Kodak's work in Japan with its sister cinema circuit to digitise its screen advertising in Italian market, generally lagging behind in the wider digital cinema marketplace. Kodak will take control of all packaging and distribution of advertising content, with some tasks taken care of in Italy (such as encoding) but full control remaining with Kodak's network operating centre in USA.

Norway's digital cinema roll-out test to expand - Norway's industry-wide attempt to digitise the whole nation in a consensus-led conversion is to expand its screen base and widen its focus to include satellite distribution. Norway's film agency Film&Kino has released extra funding for this project to expand to 23 screens, for a total d-screen base in country of 40. There is a second project involving exhibitor Kristiansand Kino and UK's Arts Alliance. The expansion of NORDIC will result in a screen base that is 10 per cent digitised, similar to USA's current situation. Phase One of the project was completed in May 2007, and resulted in identification of areas to resolve. Second phase is aimed at deepening the research to include some remote locations and assess their operational requirements, add in servers from more suppliers now that more are closer to DCI-compliance especially in field of FIPS certification. An all-digital multiplex is to be opened in Bergen in order to assess the reality of a digital environment and film flow.
