EC Forces Changes to Digital Cinema Contract Terms - Following a preliminary own-initiative investigation by the European Commission's competition authorities, Hollywood studios and Europe's third-party integrators have amended provisions of their Virtual Print Fee (VPF) contracts, notably the ones that ensured all distributors were offered the same deal. Commission was concerned that the relevant clauses could be in breach of EU rules that prohibit restrictive business practices as laid out in Article 101 of the EU Treaty. The studios made the changes before a full and formal investigation was needed. The issue has been simmering for some time as it was felt that some terms within the contracts could be detrimental to Europe's independent film distributors in accessing VPF-backed cinemas.

Christie Takes a Hand in The World’s Largest 3D Digital Cinema Projection - Christie_HP_(c)_LaurentMauger (3)

Christie® helped set a world record when it displayed the French 3D premiere of Warner Bros “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows – Part Two” on a 29.9 metre wide by 12.33 metre high (98 feet by 40 feet) screen at the Palais Ominisports de Paris-Bercy on 12 July. Guinness World Records™* certified the event.

Using six Christie Solaria™ Series CP2230 DLP Cinema® projectors, configured in two clusters of three, with each projector’s output rated at 32,000 lumens, an audience of 8,500 were thrilled to witness the epic finale between good and evil in full stereoscopic 3D.

As each cluster projected the image for one eye, the system achieved passive 3D projection with light conditions exceeding the Digital Cinema Initiative (DCI) recommended standard. The Christie CP2230 features Brilliant3D 2K technology and is Christie’s brightest digital cinema projector for screens nearly 100 feet wide.

“We’re really proud to have made this world record possible through our Christie Solaria™ range of digital cinema projectors,” said Pascal Gervais, Christie’s Regional Director. “To be chosen by our partner, the big-format 3D projection specialist 2Avi, and by Warner Bros, just confirms Christie’s technological lead, and its position as world front-runner in digital cinema.”

Harkness Screens Supports Award Winning Film-Makers - STEVENAGE, UNITED KINGDOM, AUGUST 23rd 2011 - Harkness Screens, the world’s leading supplier of projection surfaces has recently supplied a portable cinema screen to London-based Kitchen Sink Collective, a small independent group of award winning Documentary Directors who graduated from the National Film & TV School in 2011.

In March 2011, Christie, one of the world’s leading manufacturer of digital projection and display technologies (and also National Film and Television School (NFTS) Supporter), awarded the Christie Award (a state-of-the-art projector) to eight students of the film school, as a break with the tradition where the most outstanding NFTS student per year receives this prize.

Subsequently, the eight graduates, combined to form The Kitchen Sink Collective, a film-making group aimed at producing thought-provoking and challenging films that offer a variety of stories and styles ranging from documentaries, fiction and animation.

“The Christie award gave us a great start with our project. Having located a suitable venue in South London where we could showcase our films, we required a screen that would make our projects come to life. Up until now we have had to get by renting or borrowing portable screens from different sources. We realised that to make our films look great for our audiences and to reach our ultimate aim of taking our films on tour, we required a permanent solution and asked Harkness Screens to help us,” explains Kristof Bilsen, a member of the Collective.

The 12ft x 9ft screen is now fully installed into the Kitchen Sink Collective’s cinema located above the Bread and Roses Pub in Clapham and is now showcasing content from the group and hidden gems from a wide range of independent filmmakers whose work might otherwise only be seen at festivals.

“Having seen first-hand the group’s passion and enthusiasm for film-making, we were delighted to support The Kitchen Sink Collective’s local community cinema project in Clapham. We hope that the portable screen will enable them to show their innovative and thought provoking content to audiences both in London and up and down the country,” says Richard Mitchell, Marketing Manager at Harkness Screens.
