Editorial

Hello and welcome to the first of the REELTIMES.info newsletters. This newsletter is collaboration between Fred Fullerton’s www.spoolbox.net, Steve Grimley’s www.projectionists.co.uk and my website www.madcornishprojectionist.co.uk to share our knowledge and expertise in a general newsletter, which would otherwise only duplicate each of the sights. I hope that you enjoy the newsletter, which we hope will come out approximately once a month.

Each newsletter will also be available in full Technicolor on the REETIMES.info website, along with extra information and archives of past newsletters.

Over the coming months I am sure the Newsletter will develop with more information and features. Your feedback is always welcome, so feel free to email us. See the contact us section for more details.

News and Features

This section looks at news relating specifically to cinemas, the cinema and movie industry over the last month, which has been of interest or you may have missed.

An article in Screen International (Friday June 21 2002) previewed Cinema Expo 2002. In the article stastical information was provided for each of the European Cinema markets, one item of which was the number of digital projectors in each country. It was interesting to see that the UK has the highest number with five digital projectors followed jointly by German and Poland with three. Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Norway, Portugal, Russia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland still don’t have any. For those who may have missed it on Screen Daily there is an article from Cinema Expo about digital cinema. Just follow the link: http://www.screendaily.com/story.asp?storyid=8758

Also out this month was a second report by Gibboney Huske and Rick Vallieres on Digital Cinema (The report can be found at http://www.subcat.com/digital.pdf). The report mainly looks at the cost effectiveness of digital compared to the traditional methods.

Spiderman opened across the country on May 10th with a 12 certificate from the BBFC. A number of local authorises used their own powers to instigate a PG certificate instead, one of the few times that they have done this in recent years. A debate about censorship then started.

New trailers for the second Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings movies appeared on the Internet, for eager fans to see. The Harry Potter trailer is available at http://www.harrypotter.warnerbros.com and the Lord of the Rings trailer is at http://www.lordoftherings.net/.

Movie mogul Lew Wasserman, who was once the power behind Universal Studios, has died aged 89. see the whole story by cutting and pasting the link below: http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/entertainment/film/newsid_2025000/2025559.stm

Digital link brings concerts to cinemas: This story which appears on the BBC News website and is all about a concert which was broadcast to a number of cinemas and then projected digitally. To read the story follow the link below (it is possible the link has gone onto two lines, so may need to be copied) http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/entertainment/new_media/newsid_2049000/2049887.stm

The BFI have a new touring exhibition which explores the experience of going to the cinema and watching television. More details on the BFI website (http://www.bfi.org.uk)

There is a great story on the BBC news site about a cinema which has opened in Suffolk based on a 1912 design. To read the full story go to http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/uk/england/newsid_2060000/2060857.stm

Site of the Month

Each month we will evaluate and review a site which we believe is of interest to you. This month we will look at Fred Fullerton’s www.SPOOLBOX.net website.

This website is one which I regularly visit for a number of reasons. It is a great site which is easy to navigate and find what you are looking for. Fred regularly updates the site with new links and ideas. Amongst some of the features on the site there is a forum, a huge selection of photographs from cinema’s Fred has visited. Although the site is predominately made up of links to other cinema related sites it doesn’t matter because there is a huge amount of information available from this site and is definitely worth keeping an eye on.

Cinema of the Month

Our cinema of the month is the Odeon Newcastle, a four screen theatre dating back to the 1930s, but still with a lot of its original features. This fantastic cinema is gong to close in November, when it is replaced with a brand new 12 screen state of the art complex, just up the road from the current one.

If you can’t get to see the cinema yourself before it closes, don’t worry because a video CD is available to buy for £11 from Broncos Video, just go to http://www.broncusvideo.co.uk
