Formerly Frank Theatres, the fully renovated new Water Tower Cinema is opening up for the first time on Friday.

The refurbished and renamed movie house at Water Town Square opens after Frank Theatres, a long-running and widely loved fixture in the local community, shut down 10 months ago.

First launched as The Eric in 1968, new owners the Goldenberg Group said they decided to reopen the theater because of its history.

“This theater holds a lot of memories for this community,” Steve Palmer, vice president of finance and development for Goldenberg, said in a statement. “We’ve heard stories of couples who have had their first dates here, established a tradition of taking their families to holiday movies here, and those who just loved the familiar environment with the personal touch.”

The exterior of the building has been fully repainted. Inside, the lobby and concession stand has been refurbished, while each of the 10 theatres, ranging in size from 80 to 300 seats now feature cushioned leather rocker seats. There are also spaces accessible for individuals with disabilities.
