Archive is a dusty word. It conjures up images of dark rooms with shelves, items stored in regimented lines by order-obsessives wearing strong spectacles. A “film archive” suggests a particularly forbidding and inaccessible place, with rolls of film in cans, and cumbersome equipment required to spool them for viewing. Not any more, of course. The digital revolution of a decade ago has transformed film archives.
