Manchester’s new flagship arts centre, which is already £19m over budget, could end up costing even more, it has been revealed.

Financial pressures on the huge project, announced at a cost of £110m, have been detailed to councillors.

Recent figures show the town hall’s contribution has doubled to £40.5m – from £21m; while the government’s contribution remains £78m.

Contractors are in favour of more simple residential and commercial projects, councillors were told this week.

The Factory’s complex design is proving to be a ‘significant’ challenge, members were told.

The development, at the old Granada Studios site off Quay Street, will be the permanent home of the Manchester International Festival.

The aim is for it to become one of the world’s top performance venues.
