A call has been issued for members of the public to share their photographs of historic Northern Irish cinemas for a new project. The Strand Arts Centre, which opened in 1935 and is Northern Ireland’s oldest surviving cinema, is running The Last Picture House project which aims to celebrate a golden area when cinemas and picture houses were a firm fixture on the high street and in communities. It is also keen to know what people call going to the cinema and whether or not they refer to them as ‘going to the pictures, the flicks or the movies’.
