Charles Morris, the proprietor of several beloved local cinemas in the north of England, including Skipton’s Plaza Cinema and Keighley’s Picture House, has been honored with an MBE for his contributions to cinema. Morris, who also oversees Northern Morris Associated Cinemas Ltd, began his cinema career in 1986 with the acquisition of Victoria Hall in Settle. Despite being in his mid-seventies, he remains actively involved in managing his cinemas, which also include the Rex in Elland, the Cottage Road Cinema in Leeds, and the Roxy in Ulverston. This recognition comes with a bittersweet note for Morris, as it follows the recent passing of his wife, Judy, whom he credits as equally deserving of the honor. He emphasizes the critical role of public support in sustaining independent cinemas.
