Panasonic has announced the (very-long-awaited) update to the popular Lumix GH5—no, not the GH6, but the GH5 Mark II. But in case you were wondering, the company has also made it known that there is indeed a GH6 in development.Released in January 2017, the GH5 was certainly in need of an update, and Panasonic seems to have infused the Mark II with much of the tech it has been introducing on other cameras over the last four-plus years.
If you were hoping for a bump in resolution, you’ll be disappointed, however, since the GH5 II uses the same 20.3-megapixel sensor as the original model. But the new camera has a new processor, and this is what has allowed Panasonic to improve the GH5 in key areas.Most significantly, the GH5 II can record 4K video (DCI or UHD) in 10-bit 4:2:0 at up to 60p, which wasn’t possible with the GH5 without an external recorder. With the GH5 II, the HDMI output now offers 4K/60p 10-bit 4:2:2. In addition, particularly important for wide-angle shooters, 4K/60p capture uses the whole sensor area, as opposed to the slight crop in the GH5.
