Fond memories of Cheltenham’s grand old Odeon cinema

It’s six years since Cheltenham’s grand old Odeon cinema in Winchcombe Street was knocked down.

It was demolished in 2014 to make way for 97 townhouses and apartments that were launched, as Regency Place, in 2015.

The plan then was for there to be a selection of shops on the ground floor but that has so far failed to happen.

The Odeon had closed in 2006 and its demise was said to have been due to the arrival of the brand new multi-screen Cineworld cinema in the Brewery Quarter.

With people’s home viewing options becoming ever greater, it was decided that Cheltenham could not sustain two major cinemas.

And that was considered a great shame by many residents of the town, especially those who grew up watching films at the Odeon regularly.
