Escapism has never been so lucrative. Amid a year of recession, cinemas are booming, with box office revenues set to pass £1 billion for the first time. Helped by the popularity of Slumdog Millionaire and the fact that cinema represents a cheap night out, the number of tickets sold was up 15 per cent in the first six months of this year.
