Can Hornell Cinema survive?

HORNELL — An area that boasts a film legend as a native son could soon be without a silver screen. The Hornell Cinema on 191 Main St. could close, as the industry is forcing theaters to switch from traditional 35-mm film to digital. Chris Croston, owner of the Hornell Cinema, with three screens, told The Spectator his theater is “more likely to close” before switching to digital. Croston has owned Hornell Cinema since April 2008 and has put work into his theater, including sound upgrades and some basic electronic work. However, he also said the theater has seen a decline in business, with record lows the last three years. Croston would be responsible for up to $75,000 per screen to convert. “Right now, I have no answer,” Croston added.
