Cinema, Art, Poetry And Punk Collide In Chanel’s Cruise 2021/22 Collection

For Chanel’s 2021/2022 Cruise collection, creative director Virginie Viard was inspired by the “simplicity, the precision and the poetry” of Jean Cocteau’s iconic 1960 film, Testament of Orpheus. She even showed the collection against the stunning white, limestone backdrop of the Carrières de Lumières quarry in Les Baux-de-Provence.

Fine elements of early cinema weave into the fabric of this collection, from the dramatic flair of black knitted and macramé capes to pure white, billowing silhouettes. The natural landscape of Provence also makes a cameo with floral embroidery and soft-coloured fabrics in a rare break from Viard’s monochromatic aesthetic.
