Closure of Stratford Picturehouse announced

BOSSES have announced the closure of Stratford Picturehouse on the cinema’s Facebook page.

A post reveals the Windsor Street cinema – which has been there for over 20 years – will stop screening on January 5.

Plans were approved earlier this year to demolish the cinema and replace it with a 81-room hotel.

Although residents opposed to the hotel, and to the demolition of the 1930s art-deco building, are continuing to fight to get the decision over-turned.

The application stated, since the arrival of the Everyman Cinema opened in Bell Court two years ago, the business was no longer viable.

And Cineworld, which owns the Picturehouse chain, confirmed the lease – up next year – would not be renewed.

A post from staff said: “It is with great sadness that we announce the closure of the Stratford-Upon-Avon Picturehouse. The cinema will cease trading on the evening of Sunday January 5. It has been our pleasure to serve the community of Stratford-Upon-Avon since 1997 and we greatly appreciate the patronage and support that the people of this wonderful town have given us.

“We would like to sincerely thank our loyal customers and members for the many years of support and enthusiasm they have brought to the cinema.”
