Bong Joon-ho’s film Parasite, South Korea’s entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 92nd Academy Awards, has seen both critical acclaim and box office success, prompting new interest in the inventive nature of recent South Korean cinema.

That may be one reason Film at Lincoln Center and Subway Cinema have teamed up with the Korean Cultural Center in New York to present Relentless Invention: New Korean Cinema 1996 to 2003, a series featuring some essential South Korean films and filmmakers from Nov. 22 to Dec. 4.

South Korea has produced some distinctive and entertaining cinema during the last few decades. A new generation of filmmakers re-energized national cinema in the late 1990s and early 2000s with a series of gleefully inventive films that had a sharp sociopolitical edge.
