December is an exciting month for filmgoers: a new addition to the Star Wars series opens on December 17, and the much-talked about new Quentin Tarantino film, The Hateful Eight, debuts on 70mm on December 25. Beyond the commercial value of both titles, the exhibition format for each title has drawn its own attention. The dramatic question remains: which theatres will be equipped to handle film projection? Tarantino and Star Wars: The Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams are ardent supporters of film, but it’s still a surprise that their new features are in fact being projected on film. By now, film projection is much more difficult to come by, due in part to many cinemas discarding their film gear to accommodate digital.
