Sundance has a well-earned reputation of launching the careers of numerous filmmakers, actors and even the executives making the deals at the festival. It was at Sundance, in 1989, that an unknown director named Steven Soderbergh made his feature directorial debut at the festival with “Sex, Lies, and Videotape.” A relatively unknown distributor named Miramax run by a pair of brothers swooped in and picked up the rights to the film for USD $1 million, an absurd amount for such a movie at the time.
