Drunken Sonia Shakeel has been hit with a court fine after she was verbally abusive to police on a trip to the cinema. The 28-year-old was at the Odeon on Festival Park when she started to repeatedly swearing at officers.

Her friends even had to intervene during the incident on the evening of November 12.

But the defendant told North Staffordshire Justice Centre heard she was upset after being hit by a group of lads.

Prosecutor Stuart Quinn said: “The defendant was shouting at an officer and was advised to leave the area.

“She returned and continued swearing at the officers. She was repeatedly warned and told to go home. She was dragged away  by friends but she kept returning.

“Her behaviour continued, leading to her arrest. She shouted verbal abuse to officers and was taken to the Northern Area Custody Facility in Etruria.”

Shakeel, of Rushton Road, Cobridge, pleaded guilty to being drunk and disorderly.

Representing herself, Shakeel said: “I went to Festival Park with friends when a couple of Asian lads pulled up and started hitting us.

“They hit me. I did swear at them. I was walking towards my house when they arrested me.”

Magistrates fined Shakeel £184 and ordered her to pay £135 costs and a £32 surcharge.
