Campaigners are celebrating after a former cinema which was set for demolition has been recommended for listed status by Historic England.Earlier this month supermarket chain Lidl announced their intention to tear down the former Abbey Cinema building on Church Road North in Wavertree, which was deemed to be “beyond economic repair.”

Lidl said they would be submitting plans to the council to knock down the the former picture palace that features in the original draft lyrics to The Beatles song In My Life and build a new supermarket on the site. However Historic England, the public body which protects old buildings, has now officially recommended the landmark site for listing at Grade II level, which means it cannot be demolished.
