Wetherspoons is planning on opening a new public house in Glasgow’s Southside creating up to 50 jobs. The pub chain J D Wetherspoon has applied to Glasgow City Council for permission to convert the former Waverley Tea Rooms at 18 Moss Side Road in Shawlands. There are no plans to alter the exterior of the Category A listed historic building, which was built in 1922. No major internal structures will be altered either. Proposals for inside the building include creating a new bar, enlarging the kitchen area on the ground floor and creating new customer toilets on the first floor.

The proposals also likely to include the restoration of many original features like the columns that had previously been boxed in.

J D Wetherspoon says it will “invest a considerable sum in the repair and restoration of existing buildings”.

The historic premises first opened in 1922 as the Waverley Cinema, with a seating capacity of 1320.

It became the ABC Cinema in 1964, before closing nine years later.
