Weymouth Cineworld celebrates 20 years of operation

CINEMAGOERS dressed up as their favourite characters from the big screen to celebrate 20 years of their local cinema.

Weymouth Cineworld held a party on Saturday, December 21 to mark its 20th birthday.

Visitors were taken back in time to 1999 to celebrate 20 years of bringing films to people in Weymouth.

Andy Thomas, Cineworld Weymouth General Manager, said: “We’ve loved being part of the local community for the last 20 years and were delighted to celebrate this special occasion with all of our customers. It was great to see everyone embrace the nostalgia of 1999 and for us to thank their loyalty by giving away some fantastic prizes. We look forward to building on the success of our first twenty years and to continue to be the best place to watch movies in Weymouth.”

Adults and kids alike got into the birthday party spirit by joining in with a variety of games and activities themed to movies from 1999. From feasting on celebratory Tracey Flick cupcakes inspired by the Reese Witherspoon comedy film Election to testing their skills on nineties phone game favourite Snake.

There was also the chance to win some prizes by taking part in the wheel of fortune.

Meanwhile, on the spot prizes were handed out to those who embraced the theme and dressed as their favourite characters from popular 1999 films.

Cinemagoers were also treated to a special 1999 soundtrack which included Hit Me Baby One More Time, Blue (Da Be Dee) and Living La Vida Loca.

Anyone who brought along a cinema ticket from Weymouth Cineworld in 1999 was also given a year of free film with a Cineworld Unlimited Card.

An amazing year for film, 1999 saw the release of many iconic films including; The Matrix, American Beauty, Fight Club, Toy Story 2, Notting Hill and return of space opera, Star Wars Episode One: The Phantom Menace.

Since opening in 1999, the cinema has welcomed over 4.5 million local moviegoers and shown over 250,000 films.
